What kind of watch this is

James Gray directs Brad Pitt as an astronaut on a mission across the immensity of space to uncover the truth about a lost expedition. The film runs 123 minutes and treats the void less as a place of action and more as a mirror for emotional isolation. It is a slow, quiet sci-fi drama where the biggest threat is not an alien invasion but a father who cannot say he is sorry. The silence is heavy, and the space feels genuinely empty.

What the critics said

Critics generally warmed to the film, though the scores vary by platform and time. Rotten Tomatoes lists an 83% approval rating as of October 2024. Metacritic assigns a Metascore of 80 as of October 2025, which the site categorizes as generally favorable. Brian Tallerico of RogerEbert.com called it "rare, nuanced storytelling." Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times noted it was "one of the most beautiful films of the year," even when it made little sense.

How it did with audiences

Ad Astra cost $90 million to make and pulled in $127 million worldwide. That leaves a gap that accounting departments prefer not to highlight. On TMDB, users rate it 6.1 out of 10. Audiences watched a man drift through space and decided the silence was a little too loud for a Friday night.

What came next for the cast

Brad Pitt shifted from Inglourious Basterds to Bullet Train and F1. Tommy Lee Jones moved from Men in Black to The Burial and Finestkind. Liv Tyler stepped out of The Lord of the Rings toward 9-1-1: Lone Star. The credits list what happened, not why.
