Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)
Long live the king.
Follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species, thought to be mere myths, rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity's very existence hanging in the balance.

What kind of watch this is
Director Michael Dougherty approaches the 2019 sequel with the energy of a monster fan who finally got the keys to the kingdom. The runtime stretches to 132 minutes, a length that allows the film to breathe before the scale tips into pure spectacle. It trades the grounded dread of its predecessor for a louder, more chaotic clash of ancient super-species. Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, and Millie Bobby Brown anchor the human stakes, serving as the small, fragile witnesses to the giants’ war. It is a movie that knows it is a toy, and it plays with that knowledge openly.
What the critics said
Critics landed on a consensus that looks like a shrug. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 42% as of October 2024, with an average rating of 5.1/10. Metacritic assigns a 48/100 as of August 2025, which it labels "mixed or average." The RT consensus notes the film delivers spectacular kaiju action, but reaffirms that cutting-edge effects are no substitute for a good story.
Benjamin Lee of The Guardian gave it 2 out of 5 stars, arguing that rare moments of visual splendour cannot disguise a laughable script. Meanwhile, Scott Collura of IGN gave it 7.8 out of 10, calling it a fun exercise in giant monster madness.
How it did with audiences
It cost $170 million and took $386 million worldwide, a margin that leaves the accounting department rubbing its hands and the marketing team wondering what went wrong. On TMDB, users rate it 6.7 out of 10. The gap between the opening weekend and the break-even point is where the real story lives, and it was not a comfortable one.
