It leans into the absurdity of its premise without apologizing for it. You are watching for the scale, not the subtlety. If you need your monsters to whisper, look elsewhere.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes sits at 54% as of October 2024. Metacritic lands on 47 out of 100 as of August 2024. The consensus is that the spectacle works, but the story does not. Owen Gleiberman of Variety called it a "product" compared to the lyrical majesty of its predecessor. Michael Philips of the Chicago Tribune described the writing as "rogue chefs at an Olive Garden.
How it did with audiences
$150 million in, $572.5 million out. That spread suggests the giant lizard and the giant ape did the math better than the accountants. It took $196.8 million in the United States and Canada, with another $375.7 million from the rest of the world. As of 2024, that total stands as the highest-grossing Godzilla film ever.
