What kind of watch this is
Adam Wingard directs 114 minutes of two massive reptiles and primates smashing through city infrastructure while humans look on in mild confusion. The film trades on the spectacle of these creatures colliding, treating their fight as a natural disaster with a punchline. It is loud, visual, and unapologetically silly. If you enjoy watching things get destroyed without caring about the physics, this is your movie.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes lists a 75% Tomatometer score as of November 2022, based on 391 reviews. The average rating sits at 6.4 out of 10. Metacritic gives it 59 out of 100, a number that usually means mixed feelings. The consensus is that the film swats away character development to deliver spectacle. Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times called it a movie you can forget instantly after seeing it. Jamie Graham of Total Film noted the battles pack real wallop, even if the screen feels too small.
How it did with audiences
It cost $200 million and returned $468 million worldwide, a gap that Deadline Hollywood calculated as a $96.4 million net profit. Variety had pegged the break-even point at $330 million, so the film cleared the bar with room to spare. The domestic haul was $101 million, while the rest of the world supplied the other $369 million. On TMDB, users rate it 7.5 out of 10. The math works out, which is a rare luxury in blockbuster accounting.
What came next for the cast
Alexander Skarsgård stepped from Tarzan and Battleship into The Northman and Infinity Pool. Brian Tyree Henry moved from Joker to Bullet Train and Causeway. Rebecca Hall, known for The Prestige and Iron Man 3, returned for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. The credits list these shifts. They do not claim the 2021 film caused them. It merely sat in the middle of a busy schedule.
