What kind of watch this is
Frozen is a 2013 animated fantasy that runs 102 minutes. It centers on Anna, a princess who leaves her sister Elsa’s coronation to end an eternal winter. She teams up with Kristoff, an ice delivery man, his reindeer Sven, and a snowman named Olaf. The film asks who will save the day, or if no man will do it at all. It is a story about friendship, courage, and family. The hook is simple: a girl, a reindeer, and a snowman versus a frozen kingdom.
What the critics said
Critics warmed to the idea that Disney had found its groove again. Rotten Tomatoes reports an 89% approval rating from 251 reviews, alongside a 7.7 average score. Metacritic lands on 75 out of 100, a score it categorizes as generally favorable. The consensus was that the animation was beautiful and the writing smart. Alonso Duralde of TheWrap called it the best animated musical since Howard Ashman’s death. Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter noted it was energetic and humorous.
How it did with audiences
Frozen cost $150 million and took $1.3 billion worldwide, a gap that Deadline Hollywood estimated as a profit of over $400 million. It sits as the fifth-highest-grossing film ever, the highest-grossing animated film, and the highest-grossing 2013 film. Audiences on TMDB give it a 7.2 user score, while IMDb lists a 7.4/10 as of February 2026. The numbers suggest people just wanted to hear the song again.
Awards
Frozen won 7 awards and received 2 nominations in 2014. The Academy Award for Best Animated Feature went to Chris Buck. It also took home the Golden Globe, BAFTA, and Annie for Best Animated Feature. The soundtrack secured a Grammy for Best Compilation Soundtrack. "Let It Go" picked up the Best Original Song Oscar. A tidy sweep of the animated categories.
What came next for the cast
Idina Menzel moved from Glee to Uncut Gems and Wicked. Jonathan Groff followed Glee with American Sniper. Kristen Bell shifted from Forgetting Sarah Marshall to Bad Moms. Josh Gad went from 21 to Beauty and the Beast. The credits list these films. They do not say Frozen caused them.
Where it left its mark
The songs stuck. They stuck so well that The Guardian coined a term, "Frozen-mania," to describe the phenomenon. It was a cultural event that caught even UK prime minister David Cameron off guard, alongside actors Ben Affleck, Kevin Costner, and Vince Vaughn, all of whom reported dealing with children deeply preoccupied with the film. Songwriters Lopez and Anderson-Lopez told NPR they were "just trying to tell a story that resonated" and "didn't suck," unaware of the scale. Critics attributed the phenomenon to classic Disney elements, strong female characters, and the absence of a typical villain. It’s rare for a movie to become a household hazard for parents.
