Critics mostly agreed the film works. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 89% approval, based on 226 reviews, with an average score of 7.5/10. Metacritic lands on 71/100, a score it files under generally favorable. A. O. Scott of The New York Times called it a "modified, updated but nonetheless sincere" take on old-fashioned Disneyness. Richard Corliss of Time praised the "complex mix of romance, comedy, adventure and heart." Not everyone bought it. Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter called it a "passably entertaining hodgepodge." A hodgepodge, sure, but one that still lands.
How it did with audiences
A $260 million gamble that paid out $592 million worldwide. In the United States, it pulled in $201 million, while the rest of the world contributed the difference. That places it as the third-highest-grossing animated film of 2010, right behind Shrek Forever After and Toy Story 3. TMDB users rate it 7.6 out of 10. For a princess in a tower, the numbers suggest she climbed out with a solid bag of coins.
What came next for the cast
Zachary Levi went from Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel to Thor: Ragnarok. Mandy Moore traded early teen romances for The Darkest Minds. Ron Perlman kept appearing in big-budget action, moving from Hellboy to Pacific Rim. Donna Murphy shifted from Spider-Man 2 to The Bourne Legacy. The credits do not prove Tangled caused these pivots. They just mark the timeline.
