What kind of watch this is
Julius Onah directs a 119-minute action thriller where Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson steps into a political vacuum. The premise is simple: a meeting with President Thaddeus Ross turns into an international incident. Harrison Ford plays the President, lending gravity to a plot that threatens to see the whole world go red. If you like your capes with a side of diplomatic headache, this is the one.
What the critics said
Critics found the film mixed at best. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 48% Tomatometer score as of May 2025, while Metacritic lands on a 42 Metascore as of October 2025. The consensus notes Anthony Mackie capably takes up Cap's mantle, but the film is too routine and overstuffed with uninteresting Easter eggs. David Fear joked that Ross was "somehow still only the second-most destructive, rage-filled commander in chief to ever hold office". That specific rank might be debatable, but the general vibe of the script is not.
How it did with audiences
The film cost $180 million to make. It took in $200.5 million in the United States and Canada, plus $214.6 million elsewhere, for a global total of $415.1 million. Deadline reported it needed $425 million to break even. On TMDB, users rate it 6 out of 10. The math is simple: close enough to matter, not quite enough to celebrate.
