The consensus notes that deeper themes get drowned in the action, though the supporting cast keeps things solid. Owen Gleiberman of Variety called the tone "strikingly—and intentionally—earthbound." He noted the film offers a "getting-your-money's-worth feeling" despite the usual fight sequences. David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter saw a more satisfying female-starring MCU entry here, comparing it favorably to Captain Marvel. Critics praised the chemistry between Johansson and Pugh, with Brian Tallerico naming Pugh the film's MVP. It is a thriller in a superhero costume, which works because the costume is tight.
