What kind of watch this is
Banshee trades procedural patience for a steady stream of violence. An ex-con assumes the identity of a dead sheriff in a small Pennsylvania town, using the badge to settle personal scores while hiding from a Ukrainian mob boss. The show runs 38 episodes across 4 seasons, totaling 32 hours of commitment. It is a relentless, muddy ride where every favor is a debt and every handshake is a threat. The pacing never slows down, even when the plot gets tangled. It is less about who did it and more about how badly you can take a hit.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes rates the first season at 67%, a number that climbs to 94% for the second and hits 100% for the final two. Metacritic settles on 66 out of 100. Dorothy Rabinowitz of The Wall Street Journal noted the story grows enticing despite some soft-porn variety. The A.V. Club later called the third season's emotional stakes almost unbearable. The Boston Herald found it slow and pokey, though.
