American Dad! (2005)

From the creator of "Family Guy" comes a man who will stop at nothing to protect his country.

The series focuses on an eccentric motley crew that is the Smith family and their three housemates: Father, husband, and breadwinner Stan Smith; his better half housewife, Francine Smith; their college-aged daughter, Hayley Smith; and their high-school-aged son, Steve Smith. Outside of the Smith family, there are three additional main characters, including Hayley's boyfriend turned husband, Jeff Fischer; the family's man-in-a-goldfish-body pet, Klaus; and most notably the family's zany alien, Roger, who is "full of masquerades, brazenness, and shocking antics."

What kind of watch this is

Seth MacFarlane returns to the satirical gridiron, swapping the Griffin household for the Smiths of Langley Falls. The hook is Stan, a CIA agent whose patriotism is so rigid it has its own zip code. Beside him sits Roger, an alien who turns the domestic sphere into a stage for his own hedonistic misbehavior. It is animation built on a collision of extreme political types and absurd biological oddities. The show has generated 401 episodes across 22 seasons. That is 147 hours of a man in a goldfish body critiquing your life choices.

What the critics said

Critics found the show refreshing. Tony Nigro, writing for Common Sense Media, praised how it tackles patriotism and gender roles with enough realism to touch a nerve. A 2016 New York Times study noted its popularity in the Northeast and Great Lakes regions. The same study observed it was not popular in Utah or much of the South. That geographic divide is a small mystery, but the reviews are clear.

How it did with audiences

The pilot launched right after Super Bowl XXXIX in 2005, pulling 15 million viewers alongside The Simpsons. The full first season began three months later on May 1. By 2014, strong cable performance convinced TBS to order a thirteenth season. Nielsen reported 12.972 billion minutes of watch time between January and June 2025. In the first half of 2026, the show logged 10.26 billion minutes. On TMDB, users rate it 7 out of 10. It is a long-running hit that refuses to go away.

What came next for the cast

Scott Grimes went from Band of Brothers to Oppenheimer. He also starred in The Orville. Wendy Schaal had Innerspace and Small Soldiers on her resume before this, then Loving Annabelle after. The timeline is a straight line. It does not prove the show caused the career shift.
