X-Men: First Class (2011)

Witness the moment that will change our world.

Before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Before they were arch-enemies, they were closest of friends, working together with other mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known.

What kind of watch this is

Matthew Vaughn directs a 132-minute action film where young Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr bond over their new powers. They recruit a team of mutants to stop a global threat before becoming the arch-enemies the world expects. It runs long for a setup, but the chemistry between McAvoy and Fassbender carries the weight. It is a fun ride for fans of retro sci-fi who prefer their heroes charming rather than grim.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes lists an 86% approval rating based on 294 reviews, with an average score of 7.4/10 as of January 2026. Metacritic assigns a Metascore of 65 out of 100, indicating generally favorable reviews. The critical consensus notes a strong script and stylish direction. Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter called the film "audacious, confident and fueled by youthful energy." Peter Howell of the Toronto Star described it as "a blockbuster with brains." Not every reviewer was that charmed. Kenny Lengel of The Arizona Republic gave it 3.5 out of 5, noting it is good enough to rejuvenate a franchise stuck on idle.

How it did with audiences

It cost $160 million and took $354 million worldwide, a spread that satisfies accountants and leaves audiences feeling the math was done for them. On TMDB, users rate it 7.3 out of 10. Fox executives called the opening an excellent start to a new chapter, a phrase that usually precedes a franchise reboot so thorough it forgets which characters were already dead.
