The result is a 114-minute ride that moves with the breathless energy of a bad idea that refuses to stop working. It leans hard into the absurdity of the situation, finding comedy in the bureaucratic loopholes that let it happen. The tone is slick and fast, keeping one eye on the moral rot and the other on the sheer fun of watching a scam scale up. It is a film that asks you to look away from the consequences just long enough to enjoy the ride.
What the critics said
Critics landed in the comfortable middle. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 61% approval rating as of October 2021, while Metacritic sits at 57 out of 100 as of December 2025. That is the definition of mixed. The consensus leans on Jonah Hill’s performance to carry the weight. Matt Zoller Seitz of RogerEbert.com called it a film about horrible people that refuses to own the horribleness. It is a tidy summary of the film’s central tension.
How it did with audiences
War Dogs spent $40 million to make and pulled in $86.4 million worldwide. In North America, it took in $43 million, with $43.4 million coming from other territories. It opened with $14.3 million, finishing third at the box office but first among new releases. On TMDB, users rate it 7 out of 10.
