What kind of watch this is
Doug Liman directs this 115-minute blend of comedy, crime, and drama. Tom Cruise plays Barry Seal, a pilot who flew contraband for both the CIA and the Medellin cartel during the 1980s. The tone relies on the absurdity of serving two masters who are actively trying to kill each other. It treats high-stakes espionage like a corporate paperwork nightmare. The humor comes from the sheer volume of illegal activity he manages to keep on the books. It is a film about the banality of evil when evil has a flight schedule.
What the critics said
Critics found it fun, if not profound. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 86% as of October 2021, while Metacritic’s December 2025 score is 65. That gap tells you everything about the film’s intent. Variety’s Guy Lodge called it "glibly entertaining," a phrase that does a lot of heavy lifting. Leslie Felperin of The Hollywood Reporter saw a familiar type for the star. It is a movie that knows exactly what it is.
How it did with audiences
American Made spent $50 million and brought back $134.9 million worldwide, a return that covers the cost with enough room for popcorn. In North America, it took in $51.3 million, while the rest of the globe added $83.6 million. On TMDB, users rate it 6.9 out of 10.
