What kind of watch this is
Jordan Peele directs this 2019 thriller, and he knows exactly how long to let a quiet house stay quiet before the floorboards start to creak. The tension builds slowly, relying on the uncomfortable feeling that the people smiling at you are not actually smiling. It runs 116 minutes, which is enough time to realize the beach house feels less like a vacation spot and more like a trap.
What the critics said
Critics largely embraced it. Rotten Tomatoes reports 93% positive reviews from 550 critics as of November 2024, averaging 7.9/10. Metacritic assigns it 81 out of 100 based on 56 critics, signaling universal acclaim. The consensus notes Peele beat the sophomore jinx. Richard Brody of The New Yorker called it a "colossal achievement," arguing genre is irrelevant to its merits. Not everyone agreed. Stephanie Zacharek of Time found Peele overthought himself into a corner, citing too many ideas without enough answers.
How it did with audiences
Against a $20 million budget, Us took in $255 million worldwide, with $175 million of that coming from the United States. Deadline Hollywood calculated the net profit at $119 million. On TMDB, users rate it 6.9 out of 10. The numbers suggest audiences were ready for a scare that didn't ask for their permission.
What came next for the cast
Lupita Nyong'o had just finished Black Panther and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Afterwards came Wakanda Forever, A Quiet Place: Day One, and The Odyssey. Winston Duke traded Infinity War for The Fall Guy and Spenser Confidential. Elisabeth Moss stepped away from The Handmaid's Tale for The Invisible Man and Next Goal Wins. Tim Heidecker left Ant-Man and the Wasp for Y2K and HIM. The credits list these shifts. They do not claim the horror film caused them.
