What kind of watch this is

M. Night Shyamalan directs Old, a 2021 thriller where a family vacation turns into a race against their own biology. The hook is simple: the beach ages them fast. They live a lifetime in a single day. It is 108 minutes long, which feels like an eternity when your knees are giving out. Shyamalan plays with the clock, turning a holiday into a horror story about time running out. The tagline is "It's only a matter of time." The script leans on that tension. It is a film about watching your youth disappear before your eyes.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes sits at 50%, a number that feels suspiciously tidy for a film this divisive. The consensus is blunt: interesting ideas, uneven execution. Metacritic lands on 55, which is polite code for "it depends who you ask." Wendy Ide of The Observer called the exposition "ponderous and mannered," a sentiment shared by Barry Hertz of The Globe and Mail, who noted the dialogue runs in circles. Not everyone was so harsh. Richard Brody of The New Yorker saw "potent fantasy" in the sharp images. The beach, at least, got the credit it deserved.

How it did with audiences

Old earned $48.3 million in the United States and Canada, with $41.9 million from other territories, totaling $90.2 million worldwide. It opened at $16.85 million, which was the lowest opening weekend of M. Night Shyamalan’s career. Audiences were 52% female and 62% over 25. A 60% drop in its second weekend followed.

What came next for the cast

Gael García Bernal moved from Babel and Letters to Juliet to Werewolf by Night and The Mother. Vicky Krieps stepped out of Phantom Thread and Hanna into the Three Musketeers and Monster: The Ed Gein Story. Alex Wolff left Jumanji behind for Oppenheimer and A Quiet Place: Day One. Rufus Sewell traded The Tourist for Kaleidoscope and The Diplomat. The credits list what followed, not what caused it. Trajectories bend for many reasons.
