The consensus is that the film is visually sharp but narratively thin. Roger Ebert called the characters "paltry" and the story "shallow," arguing the war exists mostly for graphic visuals. The New York Daily News countered that it is "stylish and cruel," noting it might be entertaining for certain covens. Audiences polled by CinemaScore rated it a B+. It has since developed a cult following.

What came next for the cast
Kate Beckinsale stepped from the romance of Serendipity into the gothic action of Van Helsing. Michael Sheen traded period dramas for a string of vampire roles in The Twilight Saga.
