What kind of watch this is

Anna Foerster directs Underworld: Blood Wars, a 2016 hybrid of fantasy, action, thriller, and horror. It is 91 minutes of Selene, played by Kate Beckinsale, fighting a war on two fronts. The Lycans want her dead, and the vampires who betrayed her want her gone. She is not alone. Theo James plays David, and Tobias Menzies plays Marius, though the dynamic is less about camaraderie and more about who holds the gun. The film leans into the chaos of a war that has gone on for centuries. It is a straight shooter, in both senses of the phrase.

What the critics said

Critics did not warm to it. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 21% approval rating as of October 2021, with an average score of 4 out of 10. Metacritic assigns a Metascore of 23 out of 100 as of January 2026, which it categorizes as generally unfavorable. The consensus leans on the idea that the violence is stylized but uninteresting. Ben Kengisberg of the New York Times called the exposition "a dissertation instead of a sequel." Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter found it "strictly anemic," despite its talk of blood. He did praise the acting, noting that distinguished British actors often appear in Hollywood films in lieu of receiving a proper pension.
