Thanks to a Japanese scientist's invention of synthetic blood, vampires have progressed overnight from legendary monsters to fellow citizens. And while humans have been safely removed from the menu, many remain apprehensive about these creatures "coming out of the coffin." Religious leaders, government officials, and vampire fundamentalists around the world have chosen their sides. But in the small Louisiana town of Bon Temps, the jury is still out.

What kind of watch this is
True Blood, created by Alan Ball, is a 7-season, 80-episode drama that treats vampire integration as a suburban zoning dispute. The hook is the friction: synthetic blood solves the hunger, but not the prejudice. In Bon Temps, the jury is still out on whether the undead are neighbors or nuisances. It runs 80 hours, which is a long time to spend deciding if you can stand having a vampire in your living room.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes gives the series a 70% approval rating, a number that masks the journey. The first season started with mixed impressions, but the third season hit a peak of 95% with an 8.25 average. Metacritic tracked the trajectory, citing generally favorable reviews for the first five seasons with scores of 63, 74, 79, 74, and 74. The six and seventh seasons, however, dropped to 44% and mixed reviews on Metacritic. Linda Stasi of the New York Post initially called the opening episodes boring. Robert Bianco of USA Today later called it a wildly imaginative Southern Gothic parable. The decline is visible, though perhaps not as dramatic as the hype suggested.
How it did with audiences
TMDB users rate True Blood 7.6 out of 10. The first episode drew 1.44 million viewers, a quiet start compared to 4.56 million for Big Love. By late 2008, weekly viewership hit 6.8 million. The second season averaged 12.4 million a week. A 2009 episode pulled in 5.3 million viewers, setting a series record. The fourth season matched that pace with 5.53 million in 2011.
Awards
True Blood collected 7 wins from 22 nominations. Anna Paquin took the 2008 Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama Series. The show also picked up the TCA Award for Outstanding New Program. The stunt team earned a SAG Award in 2011. A 7-for-22 record is respectable, if not a sweep.
What came next for the cast
Alexander Skarsgård moved from Zoolander to Godzilla vs. Kong. That is a specific trajectory. Anna Paquin stepped out of the X-Men franchise and into The Irishman. Stephen Moyer traded indie dramas for After We Fell. The credits cannot say the vampire show caused those shifts. They can only list what came next.
