What kind of watch this is
Christopher Smith’s 2009 horror film runs 99 minutes and follows a group of friends on a yacht who find themselves trapped in a repeating loop of dread. The tagline promises that fear comes in waves, and the movie delivers on that promise with a relentless, circular structure that refuses to let the audience breathe. It is a puzzle box where the solution is just another layer of the problem. The tension builds not from jump scares, but from the slow realization that the exit is also the entrance.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes reports an 80% Tomatometer score as of October 2021, alongside a 6.5/10 average. The consensus notes the film "sails into some strange waters" but anchors them in a scary story. Empire called it a "satisfying mind-twister". Not everyone bought the loop. Mike Sheridan rated it 2/5, arguing the acting "can't shield the fact that this still an exceptionally non-scary horror". It is a puzzle box that keeps the lid slightly ajar.
How it did with audiences
The studio spent $12 million making it, a figure that suggests a certain confidence in the concept. How the ticket sales shook out remains a mystery, as no box office data appears in the record. That leaves the critics and the casual viewer to judge its worth. On TMDB, users rate it 6.9 out of 10. It is a score that says the film is competent, perhaps even clever, but not quite the experience you remember the next morning.
