What kind of watch this is
Michael Apted directs this 128-minute Bond entry, which trades the usual spy game for a global oil crisis. Pierce Brosnan plays Bond, tasked with protecting Sophie Marceau’s oil heiress from Robert Carlyle’s terrorist Renard. The plot hinges on a high-tech submarine showdown to defuse a power struggle that threatens the world’s oil supply. It is less a character study and more a engine revving loudly in an empty garage. The stakes are planetary, but the fun is purely kinetic.
How it did with audiences
It cost $135 million and earned $361.7 million worldwide, with $126 million coming from the United States. That box office total made it the highest-grossing James Bond film at the time, a record that stood until Die Another Day arrived. On TMDB, users rate it 6.3 out of 10. Audiences clearly liked the spy enough to keep the franchise afloat, even if the Razzies disagreed.
What came next for the cast
Brosnan traded Mars Attacks for Percy Jackson. Marceau moved from Braveheart to LOL. Carlyle went from Trainspotting to Eragon. Richards jumped from Wild Things to Scary Movie 3. The credits list what followed, not what caused it. No film guarantees a career pivot. Sometimes the next role is just the next available door.
