Critics gave it a lukewarm reception. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 58% as of January 2026, while Metacritic lands on 52. That is the definition of "mixed." Roger Ebert saw a film that "gets the job done," noting some subtler satire than usual. Gene Siskel called it the first Bond film he liked in years, praising the villain. Others were less charmed. Kenneth Turan found a "stodgy, been-there feeling." Janet Maslin saw a generic action event with a chronically overdressed hero.
How it did with audiences
It cost $110 million and made $333 million worldwide, with $125 million of that coming from the United States. In Hollywood math, that is a profitable weekend. On TMDB, users rate it 6.4 out of 10. IMDb gives it a 6.5/10 weighted average as of February 2026.
