What kind of watch this is
Paul Greengrass directs a 128-minute clash between a peasant and a king. The setting is 14th-century England, where war and plague have already broken the social contract. Andrew Garfield plays the man who decides the rules no longer apply. It is a history film that moves with the urgency of a thriller, trading slow-burn character studies for the immediate pressure of survival. The stakes are absolute: rise or die. There is no middle ground in this economy of power.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes sits at 57% from 118 reviews, averaging 6.0 out of 10. Metacritic lands on 56, a mixed or average score. The consensus notes the film draws potency from wealth inequality, though the history-myth blend feels awkward. Michael Phillips called it "a well-acted blur of fits and starts," praising the cast but finding the shaky camera distracting. William Bibbiani argued the Robin Hood epilogue ruined a strong emotional arc, a sentiment George Simpson echoed by calling the ending bizarre. Pete Hammond disagreed, calling it a crackerjack action film with top drawer production values. The audience grade is a B–.
