Braveheart (1995)

Every man dies, not every man really lives.

Enraged at the slaughter of Murron, his new bride and childhood love, Scottish warrior William Wallace slays a platoon of the local English lord's soldiers. This leads the village to revolt and, eventually, the entire country to rise up against English rule.

What kind of watch this is

Mel Gibson directed and starred in this 1995 epic. At 178 minutes, it does not let you rest. The film leans hard into the idea that fighting for freedom is a visceral, physical act. It is loud, bloody, and unapologetic about its scale. You will hear the score before you see the next battle. It treats history as a sports movie with a higher body count. The tagline, "Every man dies, not every man really lives," sums up the entire runtime.

What the critics said

The reception is polite but not rapturous. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 74% Tomatometer score as of May 2026, averaging 7.4/10. Metacritic sits lower, at 68/100 from January 2026, a tier Metacritic files under generally favorable. Caryn James of The New York Times called it "one of the most spectacular entertainments in years." Peter Travers of Rolling Stone noted the action will "pin you to your seat." Not everyone bought the epic scope. Richard Schickel of Time magazine suggested the film lacks a clause banning self-indulgence. It is a film that believes its own legend.

How it did with audiences

The budget sat between $53 million and $72 million. It pulled in $213 million worldwide. That is a healthy margin, even if the notes suggest the real total was closer to $209.0 million. On TMDB, users rate it 7.9 out of 10. The numbers hold up. The math is sound.

Awards

The film collected 6 awards from 10 nominations. That tally includes the Academy Award for Best Picture and the Academy Award for Best Director, both going to Mel Gibson in 1996. It also picked up the Academy Award for Best Cinematography, the Academy Award for Best Sound Editing for Lon Bender, and the Academy Award for Best Makeup and Hairstyling for Peter Frampton. The National Board of Review placed it on their Top Ten Films list. A respectable haul.

What came next for the cast

Mel Gibson traded the Mad Max desert for a 2002 alien invasion. Sophie Marceau jumped from a French party film to a Bond villain. Patrick McGoohan went from Alcatraz to a 1996 courtroom drama. The timeline does not prove the film did it. It just lists what happened next.
