What kind of watch this is

Eclipse is the second act of a love triangle that refuses to resolve itself. Directed by David Slade, the film takes the messy, angsty premise of a girl choosing between a vampire and a werewolf and turns it into a 124-minute adrenaline rush. It is less a romance and more a disaster movie where the disaster is the protagonist’s emotional indecision. The movie treats a high school graduation like a ticking clock, because in this world, picking a side might literally start a war. It is a film that asks you to take a triangle as seriously as a grenade.

What the critics said

The reviews split along a predictable line. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 46% based on 256 reviews, while Metacritic lands on 58 out of 100 from 38 critics. That is a mixed bag, technically. Variety’s Peter Debruge argued the film "finally feels more like the blockbuster this top-earning franchise deserves."

Dissenters focused on the pacing. Michael Phillips of the Chicago Tribune called the rhythm "everything like molasses running uphill.

How it did with audiences

It cost $68 million and took in $698 million worldwide, a margin that suggests the studio’s accountants slept well. On TMDB, users rate it 6.2 out of 10. That number feels polite for a film that once held the record for the biggest midnight opening in the United States and Canada, grossing $30.1 million. It was a crowded room, and everyone bought a ticket.
