What kind of watch this is

New Moon is a 2009 film that treats teenage heartbreak like a tactical nuclear event. It runs 131 minutes, a duration that feels stretched thin when you consider the amount of brooding required. The tone is equal parts suburban gothic and high-stakes melodrama, where the main threat is not the monster, but the protagonist’s inability to sit still. It asks you to suspend disbelief not just for vampires, but for a friendship that operates on pure dramatic convenience. It is a film that takes itself very seriously while accidentally becoming a masterpiece of unintentional camp.

What the critics said

Critics saw what the fans saw, and then some. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 29% as of November 2022, with an average rating of 4.7 out of 10. Metacritic lands on 44 out of 100 as of June 2025, a score that usually means "mixed or average". It is a precise diagnosis for a film that refuses to be either.

Robert Ignizio of the Cleveland Scene called it an "entertaining fantasy" with a stronger visual look. Jordan Mintzer from Variety found Stewart to be the "heart and soul" of the affair. Not everyone was convinced. Mick Lasalle of the San Francisco Chronicle warned outsiders to get ready for a "bizarre soap opera/pageant". The pace is slow, the tone downcast, and the length excessive. It is a movie that knows exactly who it is for, and loudly ignores the rest of us.

How it did with audiences

It cost $50 million and took $711 million worldwide, a ratio that suggests audiences were less interested in subtlety and more interested in vampires. TMDB users rate it 6 out of 10, a score that feels generous given the plot, though perhaps stingy given the fan devotion. The film also holds the distinction of being the least expensive movie to ever open to more than $200 million worldwide. Some records are built on quality; this one was built on sheer volume of screaming.

Awards

The film took home 6 awards from 10 nominations. That includes the MTV Movie Award for Best Movie, where the film itself was the recipient. Kristen Stewart won for Best Kiss and Best Female Performance. Robert Pattinson swept Best Male Performance and Global Superstar. Alexandre Desplat took the World Soundtrack Award for Soundtrack Composer of the Year. Rachelle Lefevre was named Best Villain at the Teen Choice Awards. The Saturn Awards, however, passed the film by.

What came next for the cast

The credits offer a neat before-and-after for the leads. Kristen Stewart had already stepped into the wild for Into the Wild, and she returned to the saga’s ending with Breaking Dawn. Robert Pattinson moved from a wizard in Goblet of Fire to a spy in Tenet, a leap that defies simple trajectory. Taylor Lautner went from a family comedy to the same final chapter. Dakota Fanning, the odd one out, pivoted from War of the Worlds to a Tarantino cameo. The films do not prove the cause. They just mark the time.
