What kind of watch this is

Bill Condon directs this 117-minute adventure fantasy romance. The tone is earnest to a fault, relying on the chemistry of Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson to carry a plot that spirals into sudden betrayal. It asks you to accept that love is a magical force stronger than physics or common sense. The pacing drags in the middle, but the stakes feel genuinely high when the honeymoon turns into a survival scenario. It is a commitment to a very specific, glittering brand of melodrama.

What the critics said

Critics were not kind. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 25%, based on 210 reviews, while Metacritic lands on 45 out of 100. That makes it the lowest-rated installment in the franchise. The consensus calls it slow and joyless, strictly for fans. Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian gave it one star, describing an "emo-operetta" that sweeps you away on a riptide of mawkish euphoria. Justin Chang of Variety simply called it disappointing. Dissent was rare, though not absent. The audience, 80% female, gave it a B+ on CinemaScore, a grade that felt more like a polite shrug than a rave.

How it did with audiences

Budgeted at $127 million, the film collected $712 million worldwide. That is a 5.6x return, which makes the accounting department smile even if the fandom debates the ending. On TMDB, users rate it 6.2 out of 10. For a movie that splits audiences down the middle, that is a surprisingly stable score.
