What kind of watch this is
David Yates strips the magic out of the final act. The trio leaves Hogwarts, and the film becomes a 146-minute trek through a world that has turned hostile. There is no school, no safety, and no hidden rooms to hide in. The tone is grim, relying on mud, rain, and the quiet dread of a prophecy coming true. It is a long, slow burn that trusts the audience to sit with the weight of a dying friend. The tagline says nowhere is safe. It is an understatement.
What the critics said
Critics warmed to the film, though with the caution of people who know it is only half the story. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 77% approval rating as of 2022, alongside an average score of 7.1/10. Metacritic sits at 65/100, a figure that signals generally favorable reviews. Roger Ebert gave it 3 out of 4 stars, calling it "a handsome and sometimes harrowing film" that remains unintelligible to newcomers. Scott Bowles of USA Today called it "menacing and meditative," perhaps the best installment of the franchise. The praise was not universal. Ramin Setoodeh of Newsweek argued the film sucked out all the magic.
How it did with audiences
The budget sat at $250 million, but the film pulled in $296 million in the United States and $977 million worldwide. That is a healthy profit, though one must remember the sequel would eventually steal the franchise’s own records. On TMDB, users rate it 7.7 out of 10. Audiences clearly did the math before the studio finished the accounting.
