What kind of watch this is
Anthony Minghella directs a 140-minute thriller about a man who prefers a convincing lie to a boring truth. Tom Ripley travels to Italy to retrieve a wealthy playboy, only to fall in love with the life, not the man. The film is a study in suffocating heat and quiet panic. Damon plays the fraud with a stillness that makes the audience complicit. It is not a fast-paced chase; it is a slow suffocation. The tagline asks how far you would go to become someone else. The movie answers that the distance is short, and the cost is high. It is a portrait of envy rendered in Italian sunlight.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes sits at 85% as of August 2024, a score that suggests the film works better than its own pacing admits. Metacritic assigns it 76 out of 100, a metric that generally implies favorable reception. Roger Ebert gave it four stars, noting we want a monster to get away with it. Janet Maslin called Jude Law’s role star-making. Not everyone was charmed. James Berardinelli found the runtime 15 minutes too long and the performance weak. He preferred the 1960 film. That is a hard sell for a film that Time named one of the year’s ten best.
How it did with audiences
It cost $40 million and made $129 million worldwide. In the US and Canada, it pulled in over $81.2 million, with another $47.5 million coming from international markets. That total easily recouped the production budget. On TMDB, users rate it 7.2 out of 10.
