What kind of watch this is

Ridley Scott directs a 131-minute crime thriller where a disguised art scholar returns to America to contact a disgraced agent. The film leans on the tension between stillness and chaos, positioning Lecter’s calm against Starling’s struggle against a malicious FBI rival. It is a slower burn than its predecessor, trading quick cuts for a smug, intellectual dread. The hook is not the chase, but the conversation. It is for those who find a polite dinner service more terrifying than a gunfight.

What the critics said

Critics found the film mixed. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 39% as of August 2024. Metacritic lands on 57, a score it files under mixed or average. The consensus notes the acting is superb, but the chemistry between the leads is missing. Time magazine called it a "banquet of creepy, gory or grotesque incidents." David Thomson of Sight & Sound argued it is "smart, good-looking, sexy, fun." Not everyone agreed. The Guardian called it an "inflated, good-looking bore.

How it did with audiences

Hannibal cost $87 million and returned $352 million worldwide. A solid return, though not the kind that pays for the next three pictures. It opened to $58 million in the U.S., the third-biggest debut ever at the time. That title was usurped quickly, but the R-rated opening record held for two years. The film spent three weeks at number one in the U.S. and four in the U.K. On TMDB, users rate it 6.8 out of 10. Audiences liked the meat; critics preferred the bone.

What came next for the cast

Anthony Hopkins shifted from intense psychological dramas to Marvel blockbusters. Gary Oldman traded period crime films for superhero franchises. Julianne Moore moved from cult classics to dystopian sagas. Ray Liotta left mob pictures for quiet character studies. The timeline lists these shifts. It cannot claim the 2001 film triggered them. Credits just mark where the path bent.
