What kind of watch this is
Robert Wise directs a 174-minute musical that leans into its own absurdity. Julie Andrews plays Maria, and Christopher Plummer plays a captain. The friction between their rhythms drives the plot. It is not a subtle film. It is loud, bright, and unapologetic about its romance. You will either hum along or leave the room.
What the critics said
The reviews split along geographic and intellectual lines. Rotten Tomatoes shows an 83% Tomatometer score as of November 2022 and an 8.1/10 average as of October 2021. Metacritic lands lower, at 63 out of 100 as of June 2025. Bosley Crowther in The New York Times panned the "romantic nonsense." Pauline Kael in McCall’s called it a "sugar-coated lie." The Los Angeles Times saw "visual and vocal brilliance." Robert Wise noted the intellectual press "destroyed us," while local papers cheered.
Awards
The Sound of Music collected 6 wins from 10 nominations at the 1966 Academy Awards. Robert Wise took home Best Picture and Best Director, a double that stands out even in a year full of contenders. William H. Reynolds, Irwin Kostal, and James Corcoran rounded out the technical haul. The National Board of Review also placed it in their top ten, a quiet endorsement for a film that refuses to stay silent.
