It runs 162 minutes. Director Jon M. Chu leans into the musical roots, letting the songs carry the emotional weight of the rivalry and bond. The hook is simple: two women forced to share a room, one who belongs, one who does not. It is less about the magic of Oz and more about the difficulty of being misunderstood.
What the critics said
The numbers lean toward approval, though not quite unanimously. Rotten Tomatoes reports an 88% Tomatometer score as of June 2025, while Metacritic settles on a 73/100 Metascore. Kyle Smith of The Wall Street Journal called it "the most dazzling live-action Hollywood musical since Chicago." Not everyone bought the magic. Odie Henderson of The Boston Globe found it "visually unappealing.
How it did with audiences
The film cost $145 million and earned $195 million at the box office. On TMDB, users rate it 6.9 out of 10. Its video-on-demand run was more decisive. Universal reported over $70 million in premium sales during the first week in North America. By April 2025, total video revenue passed $100 million. It also led Peacock’s preliminary streaming charts for the weekend of March 17–23, 2025, with 882 million minutes watched. That made it the platform’s biggest Pay 1 film for a first seven-day period.
What came next for the cast
Cynthia Erivo moved from Bad Times at the El Royale to Wicked: For Good. Ariana Grande stepped in from Don’t Look Up. Michelle Yeoh came off the MCU and headed toward Star Trek: Section 31. Jonathan Bailey left Bridgerton behind for Jurassic World Rebirth. The credits list what followed. They do not prove Wicked caused it.
Where it left its mark
The cast from the stage embraced the screen version. Chenoweth found it "filled with joy," while Menzel noted the film builds on the original in ways she never thought possible. Lorna Luft, Judy Garland’s daughter, called it "breathtaking." Even Carol Kane, a longtime Madame Morrible, said she was "bowled over." Mark Hamill dubbed it an "instant classic." Critics saw a timely message of acceptance post-election. Then a journalist’s "holding space" comment for "Defying Gravity" became a meme. It proved that even familiar lyrics can hit differently when the world is loud.
