What kind of watch this is
The Sandman is a 2022 fantasy drama where a king of dreams wakes up after a century of captivity to reclaim his stolen reality. Created by Allan Heinberg, David S. Goyer, and Neil Gaiman, it stars Tom Sturridge, Vivienne Acheampong, and Patton Oswalt. The series spans 2 seasons and 23 episodes, totaling 19 hours of viewing. It moves with the weight of myth, treating sleep as a physical landscape that can be broken, ruled, or lost. The tone is grave and atmospheric, relying on the slow unraveling of a cosmic hierarchy rather than fast pacing. It asks what happens when the architecture of the subconscious is compromised. A 106-year absence leaves deep scars on a realm that runs on belief.
What the critics said
Critics found it satisfying, if not shocking. Rotten Tomatoes reported an 88% approval rating from 123 reviews, while Metacritic assigned a 66 out of 100, landing in the generally favorable range. IGN’s Amelia Emberwing scored it 9 out of 10, praising the cast. The Guardian’s Rebecca Nicholson gave it four stars, calling it transportive. Both questioned if newcomers would connect with it. Entertainment.ie ranked it the 10th best show of 2022, noting its expert guidance. It adapts a supposedly unfilmable classic with few surprises.
How it did with audiences
The Sandman hit number one on Netflix’s global Top 10 just 3 days after release, racking up 69.5 million hours viewed. By September 18, total viewing passed 393.14 million hours. It finished as the 8th most-watched English-language show on Netflix in 2022, spending 7 weeks in the global top 10s. TMDB users rate it 7.8 out of 10. The second season opened with 28.2 million hours in its first week but missed the top spot entirely. Audiences clearly clocked the first season; the sequel, less so.
What came next for the cast
Patton Oswalt arrived from the lighter end of the spectrum, Walter Mitty and Zoolander, and left toward Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. Boyd Holbrook carried the weight of Logan and Gone Girl into a stretch that includes Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, A Complete Unknown, and The Bikeriders. The credits list these titles, but they do not claim The Sandman caused the shift. Sometimes a career just moves through a door it did not expect.
