The Purge: Anarchy (2014)
One night per year, the government sanctions a 12-hour period in which citizens can commit any crime they wish -- including murder -- without fear of punishment or imprisonment. Leo, a sergeant who lost his son, plans a vigilante mission of revenge during the mayhem. However, instead of a death-dealing avenger, he becomes the unexpected protector of four innocent strangers who desperately need his help if they are to survive the night.

Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave it a B.
How it did with audiences
It cost $9 million and took in $111 million, a ratio that film accountants find pleasing and bankers find baffling. On TMDB, users rate it 6.6 out of 10. The opening weekend pulled $29.8 million, landing second behind the gorillas. That was roughly $4 million less than the first film’s start. The math still worked out.
What came next for the cast
Frank Grillo moved from Prison Break to the Avengers franchise. Carmen Ejogo stepped from The Brave One into Fantastic Beasts. Michael Kenneth Williams followed 12 Years a Slave with a rapid-fire sequence of 2016 releases. The credits cannot say Anarchy caused that shift. They can only note what followed.
