What kind of watch this is
Josh Boone directs a 94-minute film. The tagline promises something new to fear, but what you get is a group of teens trapped in a sterile facility, trying to figure out if the monsters are outside or inside their own heads. It plays like a horror movie that forgot to be scary and a superhero film that forgot to be fun. The tone is mostly confusion, wrapped in neon lighting. It is for anyone who wants to watch five people panic in a hallway.
What the critics said
The scores suggest a film that didn’t quite land. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 36% approval rating as of January 2026, with an average rating of 4.8 out of 10 from May 2022. Metacritic gives it a 43 out of 100 as of July 2023, which it categorizes as mixed or average. Jordan Mintzer of The Hollywood Reporter called it "Generic," noting it "rarely" stands on its own. Peter Debruge of Variety found it "coherent" but lacking a "memorable personality." Tim Robey of The Daily Telegraph gave it 3 out of 5 stars, praising the lead performance despite the brisk runtime. Dissent was notable in the lead-up, with several major publications refusing to review the film due to pandemic safety concerns.
How it did with audiences
The New Mutants cost $80 million to make and pulled in $49 million worldwide. It earned $24 million in the United States, opening at number 1 despite a pandemic-shrunk theater circuit. On TMDB, users give it a 6 out of 10. The audience was mostly young men.
What came next for the cast
Maisie Williams traded Westeros for a werewolf, then pivoted to a reimagining of a classic fairy tale. Henrique Zaga bounced between a teen drama and a romance, before finding himself in a string of war films and queer dramas. The credits do not prove this movie launched them. They just show what followed.
