What kind of watch this is

The Matrix Revolutions runs 129 minutes and treats the end of the world as a scheduling conflict. Zion digs in while Neo tries to stop a rogue Agent Smith from rewriting the rules, a task that requires more time than the war allows. Lana Wachowski directs with the patience of someone who knows the audience has already seen the first two. The tagline says everything that has a beginning has an end, which is a fair warning for the runtime.

What the critics said

The reception was lukewarm, at best. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 33% with a 5.3 average, while Metacritic lands on 47 out of 100. The consensus calls it a disappointing conclusion where characters take a back seat to special effects. Roger Ebert offered three stars, noting that fans would prefer seeing it to not seeing it. CinemaScore gave it a B, a grade down from the previous film. Critics found it anticlimactic and less philosophically ambiguous than its predecessor. It provided closure, but barely.

How it did with audiences

The Matrix Revolutions cost $150 million and took in $427 million worldwide, roughly half of The Matrix Reloaded box-office total. In film accounting, that is a respectable finish. Audiences on TMDB give it a 6.8 user score, which suggests the crowd liked the first two movies but found the third a bit of a stretch. It was the eighth-highest-grossing film of 2003, a stat that feels like a polite nod to a movie that did its job.

What came next for the cast

Keanu Reeves moved from Speed to the John Wick trilogy. Hugo Weaving stepped into the MCU and Tolkien adaptations. Carrie-Anne Moss returned for a resurrection, while Laurence Fishburne joined the superhero wave. These trajectories suggest momentum, not causation. The credits cannot prove the film directed their paths. They merely mark the point where their careers took different turns.
