What kind of watch this is

Lana Wachowski directs this 148-minute film, bringing Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss back as Neo and Trinity. They are people with strange memories, trapped in a version of reality that feels like a video game. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II plays both Morpheus and Agent Smith. The movie is aware it is a reboot. It runs long, but it spends that time asking if the audience still cares about the rules. It is a puzzle box that refuses to open until you stop looking for the original key.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes settled on a 63% approval rating as of November 2022, based on 356 reviews. The average score sits at 6.2 out of 10. Metacritic, which aggregates professional reviews, landed on a 63 out of 100 Metascore by July 2023, a range that suggests generally favorable reception. The critics consensus noted the film revisits the franchise with wit and heart, even if it lacks the original’s bracingly original craft.

Audiences were less convinced. CinemaScore polled fans and gave it a B−, the lowest grade in the series. PostTrak reported 60% of viewers had a positive reaction, though only 46% said they would recommend it. Katie Walsh of the Los Angeles Times appreciated the film’s unapologetic earnestness and colorful design. The Guardian was colder, calling it just another piece of IP with no real creative life.

How it did with audiences

The film spent $190 million to make $159.2 million worldwide, a financial result that accountants categorize as a bomb and fans categorize as a surprise. In the United States and Canada, it took in $40.5 million, while the rest of the world added $118.7 million. On TMDB, users rate it 6.3 out of 10.

What came next for the cast

Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss both returned to the franchise that defined their early careers, a circular move that feels less like a comeback and more like a reunion. Reeves pivoted from The Matrix (1999) to John Wick (2014), which then expanded into John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023). Moss, after Memento (2000), found a steady rhythm in FUBAR (2023). The credits show where they went, not why.
