What kind of watch this is
The premise is simple: the Axis powers won, and the US is split between Japan and Germany. But the tone is less about tanks and more about the quiet, suffocating bureaucracy of losing. It’s a drama that asks how normalcy feels when the world has already ended. With 40 episodes totaling 37 hours, it’s a long haul. That duration is less a commitment and more a slow immersion into a world where the rules changed before you were born.
What the critics said
Critics liked the first season. Rotten Tomatoes gives it 95% approval, while Metacritic scores it 77. Meredith Woerner of io9 called the pilot an "impressive, streamlined undertaking." Matt Fowler of IGN rated it 9.2 out of 10, describing it as a "superb, frightening experience."
Season 2 cooled the reception. Its Rotten Tomatoes score dropped to 64%, and Metacritic landed on 62. The consensus noted the plot became "unwieldy," though the visuals remained strong. Season 3 recovered, earning 86% on Rotten Tomatoes. Season 4 also received positive reviews.
