What kind of watch this is

The Lego Movie runs 100 minutes and relies on a simple, brutal joke: the hero is a brick so boring he is literally beige. Chris Pratt voices Emmet, a nobody who stumbles into a quest to save the universe. Will Ferrell plays the villain, who wants to conquer the universe. The film is loud, chaotic, and surprisingly sharp about the difference between following rules and making things. It does not treat its audience like children, even if the toys are. It is a story about how unremarkable people can change the world by refusing to be ordinary.

What the critics said

Critics didn’t just like it; they clung to it. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 96% approval rating as of May 2025, with an average of 8.2 out of 10. Metacritic lands on 83, a score that signals universal acclaim. The consensus praises the animation and the unexpected depth. Michael Rechtshaffen of The Hollywood Reporter noted it showed a tired genre how it’s done. A. O. Scott of The New York Times observed the jokes tickle adults while kids roll their eyes. It’s a toy commercial that manages to feel like art, which is either a miracle or a very good marketing budget.

How it did with audiences

The Lego Movie cost $60 million to make and returned $469 million worldwide. That arithmetic turns a modest animation budget into a serious financial event. Deadline Hollywood calculated a net profit of $229 million, placing it third on their list of 2014's "Most Valuable Blockbusters." On TMDB, users rate it 7.4 out of 10. It opened to $69.1 million, the second-highest February weekend behind The Passion of the Christ. The numbers suggest audiences wanted to build something out of plastic bricks.

What came next for the cast

Chris Pratt moved from Her (2013) and Wanted (2008) to Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019), and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017). Will Ferrell moved from Zoolander (2001) and Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004) to Barbie (2023), Daddy's Home (2015), and Get Hard (2015). Morgan Freeman moved from The Dark Knight (2008) and The Shawshank Redemption (1994) to Now You See Me 2 (2016), Ted 2 (2015), and London Has Fallen (2016). The credits list what they did next. They do not prove the Lego movie caused any of it.
