What kind of watch this is
Michael Jelenic directs a 98-minute animated adventure where Mario and Luigi chase a young Bowser across the cosmos. The villain isn’t conquering worlds; he’s just trying to free his dad and get the family business back on track. It’s a space opera built on petty domestic grievances. Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, and Anya Taylor-Joy voice the leads. The stakes are galactic, but the motivation is surprisingly small.
What the critics said
The reception is a study in contrast. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 42%, while Metacritic lands on 37. Audiences, however, gave it an A- on CinemaScore. Critics found the visuals impressive but the story thin. The consensus calls the world-building frenetic yet weightless. Glenn Garner of Deadline Hollywood praised the nostalgic references and voice acting. Others were less kind. Eli Friedberg of Slant Magazine called it an unpretentiously vapid cocktail of technical mastery and lack of ambition. The film is loud, colorful, and apparently empty.
