What kind of watch this is
Stephen Norrington directs this 110-minute film where famous characters from Victorian literature band together to prevent a world war. The hook is simple: what happens when you take characters from different books and force them to share a screen? It leans hard into camp, treating the source material as a costume party rather than a narrative engine. Sean Connery plays Allan Quatermain with a weary charm that barely holds the chaotic energy together. It is a loud, colorful mess that prioritizes spectacle over logic. The result is less a serious thriller and more a chaotic collage of Victorian stereotypes.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes records a 17% approval rating as of October 2024. Metacritic assigns a Metascore of 30 out of 100 as of October 2025. Critics were not kind. Roger Ebert called it "general lunacy." Peter Travers found nothing authentic except Sean Connery. The consensus is that a great premise was ruined by poor execution.
