What kind of watch this is

Wolfgang Reitherman directed this 78-minute animated adventure, a film that treats the jungle less as a wilderness and more as a stage. The hook is pure, unapologetic energy. Mowgli travels to the man-village with Bagheera, but the journey really belongs to the animals who stop him. King Louie brings the jazz, Kaa brings the trance, and Baloo brings a philosophy that life is all about the bare necessities. It is a movie that trusts its audience to enjoy the ride without asking too many questions about the map. The tagline says the jungle is jumpin', and the film actually delivers on that promise.

What the critics said

Critics received it warmly, though perhaps partly out of respect for a man who had just died. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 86% as of June 2026, with an average score of 7.3 out of 10. Metacritic is cooler, landing on 65 out of 100 as of January 2026. Howard Thompson of The New York Times called it "simple, uncluttered, straight-forward fun". Richard Schickel of Life magazine saw it as "the best thing of its kind since Dumbo". Arthur D. Murphy of Variety noted the story was restrained, though he still gave it a favorable review. The film was nominated for Best Original Song at the 40th Academy Awards. It did not win Best Picture, despite Gregory Peck lobbying hard for it.

How it did with audiences

The budget was $4 million. The worldwide take was $206 million. In the United States alone, it pulled in $142 million. That is a ratio that makes accountants smile and studios salivate. On TMDB, users rate it 7.3 out of 10. It simply happened.

Where it left its mark

Animators like Brad Bird and Glen Keane credit the film with pulling them into the industry. Eric Goldberg called it possibly the best character animation a studio has ever done. That influence bled into later Disney hits like Aladdin and The Lion King, which borrowed its approach to animal design. Even the later Robin Hood film recycled the Baloo and King Louie dance for its own characters. The franchise spawned sequels, a DisneyToon movie, and a prequel series. It is a blueprint for studio animation, though the studio has since spent decades trying to outdo its own blueprint.
