What kind of watch this is

Tarzan is an 88-minute animated adventure from 1999, directed by Chris Buck. It follows a boy raised by an ape named Kala, who believes that this was his family. When Jane Porter arrives, the truth about his human heritage collides with the life he knows. The film explores the weight of belonging, asking what happens when you discover you do not fit where you were built. Tony Goldwyn voices the title character, while Minnie Driver and Glenn Close round out the cast. It is a classic for a reason, though the reason might be the music rather than the plot.

What the critics said

Critics largely agreed that the animation pushed boundaries. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 90% Tomatometer score as of January 2026, with 158 critics on board. Metacritic follows suit with a 80/100 Metascore, signaling generally favorable reviews. Roger Ebert gave it four stars, noting the scenes move through space with a freedom undreamed of in older animated films. James Berardinelli called the backdrops lush and the action dizzying. Not everyone was sold on the tech. Todd McCarthy found the computer graphics distracting in their differences. The visual ambition was the talking point, even when the execution drew mixed feelings.

How it did with audiences

It cost $130 million and took in $448 million worldwide, a margin that satisfies the accountants and the fans alike. In the United States, it earned $171 million. TMDB users rate it 7.4 out of 10. IMDb gives it a 7.3/10 weighted average as of February 2026. The numbers are solid, the swings are steady, and the math works out.

What came next for the cast

Tony Goldwyn moved from Kiss the Girls to Oppenheimer. Minnie Driver shifted from Good Will Hunting to The Beekeeper. Glenn Close went from Hook to Guardians of the Galaxy. Alex D. Linz left Home Alone 3 for Bounce. The credits list what came next. They do not explain why.
