What kind of watch this is

Craig Zobel’s 2020 thriller runs 90 minutes and strips the genre down to its bones. Twelve strangers wake in a clearing, hunted by rich people who treat violence as a hobby. The tone is tight, violent, and surprisingly dry. It leans on the idea that privilege makes monsters, then lets the hunted fight back with brutal efficiency. The hook is simple: what happens when the prey stops running? It is a tight, visceral ride that trusts the audience to keep up with the chaos.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes sits at 57% as of November 2022, with an average rating of 5.9/10. Metacritic lands on a 50 out of 100, a score it files under mixed or average. The consensus is that the film works as a darkly humorous action thriller but misses the mark when aiming for social satire.

How it did with audiences

The Hunt opened to $5.3 million in the United States and Canada, finishing fifth. It took in $5.8 million domestically and $6.6 million elsewhere, for a worldwide total of $12.4 million. The release coincided with a pandemic-stricken box office, where theaters were closing and audiences were shifting to drive-ins. On TMDB, users rate it 6.7 out of 10. The numbers reflect a movie that found its audience in parking lots rather than plush seats.

What came next for the cast

Hilary Swank had a two-year gap between Insomnia and Million Dollar Baby before The Hunt. Afterward, Ordinary Angels arrived in 2024. The credits cannot say the thriller caused that hiatus. They can say what followed. Ethan Suplee moved from American History X to The Wolf of Wall Street, then packed three projects into 2022: Babylon, Dog, and Clerks III. Betty Gilpin’s path went from True Story and Isn't It Romantic to The Tomorrow War, American Primeval, and Office Romance. Teri Wyble shifted from Terminator Genisys and Jack Reacher to Reminiscence.
