The Hills Have Eyes (2006)

The lucky ones die first.

Based on Wes Craven's 1977 suspenseful cult classic, The Hills Have Eyes is the story of a family road trip that goes terrifyingly awry when the travelers become stranded in a government atomic zone. Miles from nowhere, the Carter family soon realizes the seemingly uninhabited wasteland is actually the breeding ground of a blood-thirsty mutant family...and they are the prey.

What kind of watch this is

Alexandre Aja’s 2006 film runs 107 minutes. The hook is simple: a family drives into a government atomic zone and finds it is not uninhabited. The tagline, "The lucky ones die first," sets the tone. It is a film that understands panic is contagious. Watch it in one sitting, because pausing to think about the stakes is part of the experience.

What the critics said

The reception was split, which suits a film that wants to scare you. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 52% as of October 2021, while Metacritic lands on 52 out of 100 as of February 2024. The consensus called it faster and gorer for hardcore fans, but a turn-off for casuals. The Washington Post found it "too damned good," a compliment that sounds like a warning. Roger Ebert, however, wanted more character depth and less mindless destruction. He wanted to know about the mutant with the walkie-talkie, but got no luck.

How it did with audiences

The Hills Have Eyes cost $16 million to make and took in $70 million worldwide. In studio terms, that is a solid hit. In any other industry, it is a business that covers its overhead and then some. On TMDB, users rate it 6.5 out of 10. The math works out better than the reviews might lead you to believe.
