What kind of watch this is
Marcus Nispel directs this 98-minute horror film, which takes a familiar slasher premise and strips away the comfort of the rules. Five friends pick up a traumatized hitchhiker, and the mistake costs them everything. The tagline claims your knowledge of fear doesn't come close, which is a bold claim for a movie about a family of psychopaths with a chainsaw. It is not a nuanced character study. It is a sustained, loud threat that refuses to let you breathe. You press play expecting a joke, and you get a warning instead.
What the critics said
The critical reception was decidedly cool. Rotten Tomatoes recorded a 37% Tomatometer score based on 155 reviews as of November 2024, with an average rating of 4.9 out of 10. Metacritic landed at 38 out of 100 from 33 critics, a score that signals generally unfavorable consensus. The crowd, however, fared better, awarding a B+ on CinemaScore.
Manohla Dargis of the Los Angeles Times found the film "callous rather than creepy," a distinction that stings. Roger Ebert went further, offering a zero-star review and describing the movie as "contemptible." It is a rare grade, and a loud one.
How it did with audiences
$9.5 million in. $107 million out. That math makes for a very good year, even if the franchise’s other entries had to work harder for their keep. It opened at number 1 in the U.S., pulling in $29.1 million over its first weekend. By day 17, it had crossed $66 million domestically. TMDB users give it a 6.3 out of 10, a score that suggests the audience enjoyed the ride without necessarily wanting to invite Leatherface to dinner.
What came next for the cast
Jessica Biel moved from The Rules of Attraction to Total Recall. Jonathan Tucker shifted from The Virgin Suicides to Westworld. Andrew Bryniarski followed Pearl Harbor with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning. Erica Leerhsen went from Hollywood Ending to Wrong Turn 2: Dead End. The credits list these titles, but they do not prove the slasher caused the pivot. They just mark the path.
