What kind of watch this is

M. Night Shyamalan’s 2008 thriller runs 90 minutes, a tight window for a story about people choosing to die rather than live. Mark Wahlberg and Zooey Deschanel star as a couple fleeing a biological threat that turns the northeastern United States into a mass suicide zone. The film asks if the cause is a man-made weapon or something stranger. John Leguizamo plays Julian. It is a movie about the terror of not knowing why people around you are choosing the exit.

What the critics said

Critics were not kind. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 17% as of January 2026, with an average rating of 4/10. Metacritic agrees, landing on 34 out of 100. The consensus calls the film "an incoherent and unconvincing trifle." Not everyone hated it. Glenn Whipp enjoyed it as a "genuinely enjoyable B-movie." Kirk Honeycutt of The Hollywood Reporter found it lacked "cinematic intrigue." That is a fair split, or a total failure, depending on your tolerance for bad scares.

How it did with audiences

The marketing pushed hard on aggressive visuals, which did the trick for curious viewers. Then the press turned on it. Several outlets, including USA Today, actively rooted for the film's failure, branding M. Night Shyamalan a "hopelessly arrogant has-been." It opened with $30.5 million, placing third at the box office. Internationally, it pulled in $32.1 million across 88 markets in three days. On TMDB, users rate it 5.4 out of 10. The audience voted with their feet, even if the critics held their breath.

What came next for the cast

Wahlberg moved from The Departed to Ted. Deschanel shifted from Elf to (500) Days of Summer. Leguizamo went from Romeo + Juliet to John Wick. The film sat in the middle of these distinct career turns. It did not cause them. It simply existed there.
