Twenty-eight weeks after the spread of a deadly rage virus, the inhabitants of the British Isles have lost their battle against the onslaught, as the virus has killed everyone there. What kind of watch this is

28 Weeks Later strips the zombie movie down to its core: silence. Juan Carlos Fresnadillo directs a film where the monsters do not scream, they just wait. The British Isles are empty, a quiet stage for a virus that learned patience. It is 99 minutes long, which feels like a lifetime when the only sound is your own breathing. The horror comes from the absence of noise, not the presence of violence. It is a slow, suffocating exercise in dread.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes gives it a 73% Tomatometer score as of January 2026, while Metacritic lands on 78. Critics generally agreed it was a solid entry in the franchise, even if they saw it as a step down from the original's intimacy. Variety’s Derek Elley called it a "full-bore zombie romp" that keeps the pressure on. Fangoria’s Michael Gingold noted it remains "scary and intense." The consensus was that the camera work worked until it didn’t.

How it did with audiences

$15 million in. $65 million out. That is a solid margin, though not the kind that builds monuments. It opened to $9.8 million in the US, which fell short of the $13 million pre-release prediction. In the UK, it did better, beating the original’s opening weekend by 34%. On TMDB, users give it a 6.6. Solid, if slightly more cautious than the box office implies.
