What kind of watch this is
Francis Ford Coppola stretches the runtime to 202 minutes, splitting the screen between 1950s Michael and 1910s Vito. One is expanding the family business into Las Vegas; the other is growing up in New York. The film asks you to watch two men become the same person, then wonder if either one survived the process. Al Pacino and Robert Duvall play the same soul at different ages, and the camera treats them with identical, cold respect. It is a heavy lift for a Tuesday night, but the symmetry holds the weight.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes counts 96% positive reviews as of January 2026. Metacritic, slightly cooler, lands on 90. Pauline Kael in The New Yorker saw it as "thematically richer, more shadowed, more full." She wanted to see the worst, comparing the violence to Tolstoy. Not everyone agreed. Vincent Canby in The New York Times called it "stitched together from leftover parts." He noted it "has no mind of its own." Variety reported Canby was a minority of one. The film drew mostly admiring reviews.
Awards
The 1975 Oscars gave The Godfather Part II 6 wins out of 11 nominations. Francis Ford Coppola took Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. Robert De Niro won Best Supporting Actor. Dean Tavoularis and Nino Rota took home the design and score categories. It became the first sequel to win Best Picture. The Academy loves a family reunion.
