What kind of watch this is

Sergio Leone’s 1984 crime drama runs 139 minutes, a duration that feels less like a film and more like a long, slow exhale. The story spans decades, moving from the gritty streets of the Lower East Side to a quieter, sadder return thirty years later. It is a film about memory, where the past does not stay in the past but follows the protagonist back into the present. De Niro plays Noodles, a man haunted by the choices he made when the world was loud and dangerous. The pacing is deliberate, allowing the weight of regret to settle in before the next scene begins. It is a heavy lift, but the kind of heavy that leaves a mark.

What the critics said

The reception story is a tale of two versions. Rotten Tomatoes now shows an 86% approval rating, while Metacritic sits at 75. In 1984, however, American critics were dissatisfied with the shortened theatrical release. Roger Ebert called that cut a "travesty," yet awarded the uncut version four stars. Gene Siskel labeled the uncut film the best of 1984 and the shortened version the worst. That specific confusion defined its early legacy.

What came next for the cast

Robert De Niro moved from Taxi Driver to Joker, a span that defies simple chronology. Joe Pesci went from Raging Bull to Home Alone, trading grit for slapstick. James Woods slipped from Videodrome to Scary Movie 2, a fall the box office might envy. Elizabeth McGovern left Ordinary People for Kick-Ass, a jump that suggests range or just luck. The credits list the films, not the cause. The film did not build their careers. It just happened to be in the middle of them.
