What the critics said
The reception was lukewarm, to put it generously. Rotten Tomatoes reports 41% positive reviews from 221 critics, averaging 5.4 out of 10. Metacritic scores it 49 out of 100 based on 46 reviews, a metric for mixed reception. Audience scores from CinemaScore landed at a C+. Robert Daniels of RogerEbert.com gave it 1.5 stars, noting it took more effort to make a boring post-apocalyptic film than a good one. Guy Lodge of Variety called it a low-energy blockbuster lacking real characters to hold onto. David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter found it muted but appealingly mellow. It is a film that tries very hard to be chill, and mostly succeeds in being boring.
How it did with audiences
The Dog Stars cost $110 million to make. It took in $15 million in the United States and Canada, plus $24 million elsewhere, for a worldwide total of $39 million. That is a significant gap between ambition and bank. On TMDB, users give it a 6.6 out of 10.
